Week 6 Practicum: The spark of intuition

Closing unit 2 — setting up a problem, stepping away from it, and catching the answer arriving before the reasoning does

29 March 2027

Unit 2 closes on the state most people already recognise but rarely examine: the answer that shows up before the steps that supposedly produced it. This week asks you to engineer the conditions for that arrival on purpose, rather than waiting for it to happen to you.

No grant lands this week — funding runs on alternate weeks. If you’re drawing on money carried over from an earlier week to fund this practicum, see policies for the receipt requirement.

Before the practicum

Choose a real problem — a piece of writing that isn’t working, a design decision, a puzzle, a technical bug — that you have genuinely tried to solve and gotten stuck on. It has to be a problem you care about the answer to, not an artificial one built for this exercise.

In the practicum

Work the problem directly for a fixed period, then deliberately stop and do something unrelated and non-verbal — a walk, a shower, tidying a room. Do not try to force the answer during the break; the break is the method.

Afterwards

If an answer or a usable fragment of one arrives, write down the exact circumstance — what you were doing, what triggered the noticing — before you do any work checking whether it’s actually correct. Keep that arrival note separate from your later verification. The two are different kinds of mental event wearing the same name, and unit 3 depends on you being able to tell them apart.

The spec

What you bring to the session. Written so a reader can tell whether it has been met without asking you.
