Week 2 Practicum: Uncontrollable laughter
A practicum in losing control on purpose — chasing the point where laughing stops being a choice
1 March 2027
Week 1 asked you to notice a sensation arrive from outside you. This week asks you to notice a state that arrives from between people, and that mostly resists being summoned alone. Uncontrollable laughter is one of the few everyday experiences with an unambiguous physical tell — you can point to exactly when it stopped being a decision.
No grant lands this week — funding runs on alternate weeks. If you’re drawing on money carried over from an earlier week to fund this practicum, see policies for the receipt requirement.
Before the practicum#
Bring something that has reliably broken you before: a person, a video, an in-joke, whatever your history says is not a safe bet against your composure. Don’t bring something merely funny; bring your known weak point.
In the practicum#
Work in pairs or small groups. Let the group’s laughter do what it does — notice how quickly it becomes self-sustaining, independent of whatever triggered it. The point to catch is the handoff: the instant the laugh stops answering to the joke and starts answering to itself.
Afterwards#
Try, alone and later, to get back to that state by recalling the same trigger. For almost everyone this fails, or produces something noticeably smaller. Say in your note what was missing the second time — the audience, the unpredictability, something else. A state you can’t reliably re-enter by description is exactly the kind this course exists to sit with.
The spec
What you bring to the session. Written so a reader can tell whether it has been met without asking you.
- you reached genuine, involuntary laughter (not performed laughter) at least once during the session
- your note identifies the specific moment control was lost — the point after which stopping was no longer available to you
- you attempted, and failed, to summon the same state alone afterwards, and wrote down what was missing
