Policies and support
The course-wide rules for late work, extensions, academic integrity and getting help.
Late work#
Work submitted after its due time is marked down 5% of the available weight per day late, up to five days, after which it is not accepted without an extension. This applies uniformly across the three assessments; there is no separate grace period.
Extensions#
Extensions are granted on request, made before the deadline, for a specific new date rather than an open-ended delay. Ask the assessment’s teacher (named on the assessment page) rather than the convenor, unless the request concerns the capstone, which the convenor sets.
Academic integrity#
Declare any assistance — a person, a tool, a source consulted beyond the course’s own readings — on the assessment it was used for. Declared assistance is not itself a penalty; the reports and reviews in this course ask for your judgement applied to supplied or chosen material, which declared assistance does not replace.
Content boundary#
This course teaches side channels at the level of mechanism, historical disclosure, and defensive cost. It does not teach or assess operational exploitation of a system you do not own or have explicit authorisation to test, and no assessment in this course asks you to produce one. Submitted work that goes beyond that boundary will be referred, not marked.
Getting help#
For a specific week’s Bench or lecture, ask that week’s teacher (named on the people page). For anything about the course as a whole — extensions, the capstone brief, a concern about the content boundary above — email the convenor.
