Channel Report
A full treatment of one of the seven channels the course argues, written to the same standard the lectures introducing them were written to
Due: 23 April 2027 · Weight: 30%
The brief#
Choose one channel from weeks 2 through 8. Explain its mechanism, its founding disclosure, and what it costs a defender to close it — as if you were writing the lecture that introduced it.
This is the course’s own format, turned around: every lecture so far has paired a mechanism with a historical case and a defensive cost. This report asks you to produce that same triple yourself, for a channel of your choosing, in enough depth that a reader who missed the corresponding lecture could follow the argument from your report alone. A report that only describes the mechanism, without the disclosure or the cost of defending against it, has done a third of the assignment.
The scope and the deadline are set together. Week 8’s lecture, the last of the seven, runs on 12 April; the report is set at that week’s Bench and due eleven days after it, on the Friday of week 9. Every channel you may choose from has been lectured, and its Bench run, before the deadline — including the one taught last, which is otherwise the channel a student cannot afford to pick.
What you submit#
A single written report, 1,500-2,500 words, citing at least one primary source for the channel’s founding disclosure (the papers referenced in this course’s own lectures are acceptable choices, but you are not restricted to them). No operational exploitation instructions — describe what the disclosure demonstrated and how, not a working recipe for reproducing it yourself.
The spec
The brief poses the problem and leaves room for a response. The spec is the fixed part: what a marker checks. Some lines can be checked mechanically; the rest call for judgement.
- submitted by the deadline, as a written report of 1,500-2,500 words
- the report cites the original disclosure (or an equivalent primary source) for its chosen channel
- the report states a defensive cost for closing the channel, not only the mechanism that produces it
