Week 11 Seminar: Reading the six as-ifs
A close, unhurried reading of the Diamond Sutra's closing gatha against Tang Yin's own choice of it as a name.
17 May 2027
Before the seminar#
Read the gatha itself, in translation, plus the short biographical note on when and why Tang Yin adopted the name Liuru.
In the seminar#
Slow, collective close reading: each of the six images in turn (dream, illusion, bubble, shadow, dew, lightning), asking what specifically it adds that the others don’t, before asking what it would mean to take the whole line seriously as a stance on authenticity rather than as pious decoration.
Afterwards#
Nothing formal is due. Informally: reread your own attribution note or dossier and notice whether it assumed a fixed, discoverable “real” painter underneath the evidence, or something closer to what this seminar just read. Either is defensible; knowing which one you did is the point.
The spec
What you bring to the session. Written so a reader can tell whether it has been met without asking you.
- you can explain what each of the six images in the gatha is doing, not just recite the list
- you can state, in your own words, what changes about the course's central question if the gatha is taken seriously
