Week 2 Workshop: Starting the Pattern Diary
Setting up the habit the whole semester leans on — noticing a pattern in your own life and writing it down before you know what, if anything, it means.
Field session
2 August 2027
The Pattern Diary is the running thread underneath the whole semester, and this workshop is where it starts. The habit is simple to describe and surprisingly easy to do badly: notice something — a repeated number, a run of bad luck, a dream that lined up with the next day — and write down what happened before you write down what you think it means. Most people’s first instinct is to skip straight to the interpretation. The diary asks you to slow that down by one step.
Before the workshop#
Bring whatever you’re going to actually use for twelve weeks. A dedicated notebook works. So does a notes app. What doesn’t work is a format you’ll abandon by week 4 — the exercise depends on volume.
In the workshop#
A short demonstration of a strong entry versus a weak one, then time to write your first real entry about something from the last few days. Wren reads a handful anonymously and the group discusses, out loud, where the noticing stopped and the interpreting started.
Afterwards#
Keep going. The diary itself isn’t marked week to week — it feeds the Pattern Diary assessment directly, so an entry written honestly now is easier to use later than one written to look good in retrospect.
The spec
What you bring to the session. Written so a reader can tell whether it has been met without asking you.
- you have opened a diary (paper, notes app, whatever you'll actually keep using) and made one entry
- the entry describes what you noticed before it describes what you think it means
- you can name one thing you almost didn't write down because it felt too small
