Week 9 Tutorial: Who Gets Stuck

Auditing a public transport fare gate for the bodies and situations its default path doesn't fit

19 April 2027

Before the tutorial

Find a fare gate you use or pass regularly, and locate its accessible alternative — a wider gate, a staffed counter, an intercom.

In the tutorial

We map, gate by gate, how far the “alternative” path actually is from the default one, and for whom the default was never really designed.

Afterwards

“Exception handling” is a phrase worth carrying into the final project — most of this course’s machines have one, and it tells you who they expect.

Who benefits when the design is bad?

The spec

What you bring to the tutorial. Written so a reader can tell whether it has been met without asking you.

  • you identify one fare gate near you and its stated accessible alternative
  • you can describe a specific person or situation the default gate doesn't fit
  • you note how far the accessible alternative is from the default path, in steps or metres
