Week 6 Tutorial: The Vulnerable User
Building a duress-accessibility checklist from a de-identified hospital check-in case
29 March 2027
Before the tutorial#
A short de-identified case is provided in the tutorial; no preparation needed beyond having thought about a time you or someone you know dealt with a form or terminal while unwell.
In the tutorial#
Working in groups from the provided case, we build a duress-accessibility checklist: concrete, checkable items rather than general good-design principles.
Afterwards#
This is the most sensitive machine category the course studies — bring the same care to the write-up you’d want extended to you.
Who benefits when the design is bad?
The spec
What you bring to the tutorial. Written so a reader can tell whether it has been met without asking you.
- you can name three states (pain, distress, unfamiliarity) a check-in kiosk assumes away
- your checklist gives at least five concrete items, not general principles
- you can point to one item that would change what the kiosk asks first
