Week 9 Tutorial: Reform briefing
Mapping the Closing Loopholes minimum-standards order onto the mechanisms studied earlier in semester
Graded checkpoint, checked live at the start of the session · Weight: 2%
Before the session#
Take two provisions from the 2024 “employee-like worker” minimum standards order and map each onto a specific mechanism the course has already covered — the ETA model from week 2, the scoring penalty from week 4, a deactivation trigger, or similar. Then name one mechanism from those weeks that the order still doesn’t reach. Bring the mapping as a short table: provision, mechanism, covered or not.
In the session#
Small groups build a shared table mapping order provisions — the minimum pay floor, the deactivation-notice requirement, the collective-bargaining access clause — onto specific platform mechanisms from your week 6 unit economics breakdown and week 2 ETA log, then identify gaps: what a rider affected by one of those mechanisms still isn’t covered for.
Afterwards#
This table is useful raw material for the comparative essay due in week 11.
The spec
What you bring to the session, checked live: a checkable minimum plus one item that's judged by discussion, not marked for prose.
- two named provisions of the Closing Loopholes minimum-standards order, each mapped onto one platform mechanism from weeks 2–6
- one mechanism from weeks 2–6 identified as still uncovered by the order
- you have compared the pre- and post-reform position from weeks 8 and 9
