Week 6 Tutorial: Unit economics clinic
Building a single order's cost breakdown by hand from published fee schedules and commission rates
Graded checkpoint, checked live at the start of the session · Weight: 2%
Before the session#
Pick one order — real or reconstructed from a receipt — and build its full cost breakdown: what the customer paid, what the platform kept as commission, any discount or subsidy applied, and what the rider was paid. Cite a published rate or fee schedule for each figure rather than estimating. Bring your working, not just the total.
In the session#
Working from published commission rates and delivery-fee schedules (Uber Eats’ merchant-facing rate card, or another Australian platform’s public fee terms), the clinic builds an order’s unit economics line by line and compares breakdowns across apps to see where the numbers diverge.
Afterwards#
Keep your breakdown — week 9’s provision-mapping exercise asks which of these cost lines a regulatory minimum standard actually reaches.
The spec
What you bring to the session, checked live: a checkable minimum plus one item that's judged by discussion, not marked for prose.
- a complete cost breakdown for one order: customer fee, platform commission, any discount or subsidy, and rider pay
- every figure in the breakdown cites where it came from (a published rate card, a promotion's terms, a rider pay statement)
- one sentence stating which party absorbs the cost if a named subsidy line is removed
