Chajie spent four years on a dispatch-algorithms team, tuning the estimated-time and scoring models that tell a rider where to go next and how long they have to get there. The job looked like applied statistics from the inside. It didn’t look that way from the outside, and the gap between those two views is most of what this course is about.
Chajie’s research since has followed platform labour through China’s food-delivery boom and into the regulatory responses now underway in Australia and the EU — not to declare a winner, but to work out which parts of “the algorithm decided” are actually load-bearing and which are just where the paper trail happens to stop.
Office hours are announced weekly; email is for anything that can’t wait, not for line-by-line feedback on your work — that belongs in the session, where it can turn into a conversation instead of a verdict.
