Ask during a studio, where the bench and the materials are already out; a technique question over email is a technique question I can't actually answer.

Anselm runs a small handbound-book and letterpress practice outside the university, and took the tutoring job because most of what he knows about paper, ink and wear came from repairing his own mistakes rather than from a textbook. He teaches the materials studios the way he’d teach an apprentice: hands on the actual stock, not a slide of it.

His rule for a first attempt at any material technique is that it should look obviously wrong to the person who made it — that’s the only sign the eye is learning faster than the hand.
