The Note

One note, on one real piece of work, that has to survive the room breaking it before it survives a marker reading it.

Due: 5 April 2027 · Weight: 30%

The brief

Write one note, on one real piece of work someone else made, that a stranger could use to prove you wrong.

This is the semester’s method in miniature, marked properly for the first time. Pick any domain covered by weeks 1 through 5 — visual art, code, prose, or the revision exercise from week 2 — and any real piece of work that isn’t your own. The room you build the note in is the crit from week 6; the version you hand in is the one that survived it.

A strong response doesn’t hedge the note into safety to guarantee it can’t be wrong. It stakes a specific claim, on a specific part of the work, and says plainly what would disprove it. A weak response is technically correct about something nobody could disagree with, which is a different kind of failure to being wrong outright.

What you submit

One page: the piece of work (linked, attached, or quoted in full if it’s short enough), your note on it, and one sentence stating what would prove the note wrong. Say in a line what assistance, if any, you used to draft it — the policies page explains why that line matters here specifically.

What the criteria mean

The spec

The brief poses the problem and leaves room for a response. The spec is the fixed part: what a marker checks. Some lines can be checked mechanically; the rest call for judgement.
