Introduction. Last week’s discipline was cutting a message down to what actually mattered. This week does the same thing to twelve weeks: comparing where you started against where you are now, and keeping only the parts backed by something you actually did.
Activity 1 (individual, then pairs, 10 min): Then and now. Individually, pull up the five scores from Week 1’s starting point check, alongside the schedules and plans you brought. Pick the one that’s changed the most, and back it up with evidence from what you brought — something you actually did this semester, not something you meant to. Then compare picks with one other student.
Presentation (groups of 4): Showcase. Each group presents one member’s biggest change as a short case study, in the same shape as Week 8’s incident report — starting state, what changed, and the actual reason — except this time the outcome is good.
Activity 2: Assignment 3 component draft + Final Exam station rehearsal. Pick one Assignment 3 component you haven’t drafted yet, and draft it in full using what you already have. Then rehearse one Final Exam station under its stated time limit, with a tutor timing it.
Discussion / debrief: Drafts stay yours — nobody swaps assignment work. Instead, discuss the exam station rehearsal: name one thing the time limit made you skip that you wouldn’t skip given longer, and one way to guard against skipping it for real.
Wrap-up. Read the course’s opening line aloud once, as a class, without further comment: “A practical course in the personal maintenance a computer science degree assumes you handled elsewhere: showering on a schedule, eating something with more than one food group, replying to a message before it’s a week old, and holding a conversation that isn’t about your degree.”
Afterwards#
Keep the draft; it is the starting point for one component of what Assignment 3 asks you to submit in full. Draft the rest before the deadline.
The spec
This Lab's objectives: what you're expected to bring away from the session, written so a reader can tell whether each one has been met without asking you.
- one Assignment 3 component is drafted using real data already collected
- one Final Exam station is rehearsed under its stated time limit
