Week 1 Lab: Getting started
Week 1 lab, a machine you can break, the course toolchain running, and something rough to show
22 February 2027
The first lab exists to remove every excuse before the real work starts. You leave with a machine you are not afraid of and a toolchain that runs.
Before the lab#
Have a Linux machine you can afford to break, a virtual one is ideal, and a git account you can push to. Install the course toolchain and confirm the site builds locally.
In the lab#
We go around the room with the screenshot each of you brought and the one sentence saying why. Then we sketch, on paper, the setup each of you thinks you want. Nobody touches a config file. This is the last week the setup is still a plan rather than a problem.
Afterwards#
You leave with a working environment, a rough target, and a partner whose feedback you will hear all semester.
The spec
What you bring to the session. Written so a reader can tell whether it has been met without asking you.
- you have a machine, real or virtual, you are willing to reinstall
- the course site builds and previews on your machine
- you can show the class one screenshot you admire and say why
