The Screenshot

The composed screenshot of your desktop, marked as an act of visual craft and paired with an honest shot of the same machine as it actually looks in use.

Due: 16 April 2027 · Weight: 15%

The screenshot is how ricing travels, and composing one is a craft in its own right. This component marks that craft, and then asks you to tell the truth about it.

The brief

Compose one screenshot worth posting, and one that admits what the desktop is like to live in.

The staged shot is the poster: the wallpaper, the open windows, the running widgets, and the framing all arranged to argue for the desktop at its best. The honest shot is its counterweight, the same machine mid-task with the clutter left in. The pair is the point. A rice that only ever photographs well is hiding something, and the gap between the two images is often where the interesting decisions live.

What you submit

Two images of the same desktop: a composed hero shot at full native resolution, and an unstaged shot taken on an ordinary working day. Name what changed between them, so the marker can read the staging as a set of choices rather than a trick.

The criteria below are weighted. Composition carries the most, because the poster is the artefact the rest of the world sees; the honest pair is marked next, because a screenshot you cannot stand behind is worth less than one you can.

The spec

The brief poses the problem and leaves room for a response. The spec is the fixed part: what a marker checks. Some lines can be checked mechanically; the rest call for judgement.
