Lectures

The four lectures this course takes out of the lab, and what each one is for.

Most weeks in SLOP2895 are spent at a bench rather than in a lecture theatre. Four are not. Two of them open the course, because a method has to be agreed before it can be used; the other two exist because two ideas here cannot be arrived at by handling a specimen at all.

Week 1, A Sandwich Is a Structure. What the course treats a sandwich as, why that definition has to be argued for rather than assumed, and what will count as evidence for the rest of the semester.

Week 2, Beams, Spans and Recovery. The outer layer as a structural member, and the difference between bending that comes back and bending that does not — the distinction every later observation rests on.

Week 4, Moisture Is a Load. A compression failure happens while you watch it. A moisture failure has already happened by the time you look, and the specimen that failed is the specimen you tested plus a delay. The lecture is where the delay gets modelled, so that a bench session can be designed to catch it.

Week 8, The Order of Layers. Reordering an assembly changes nothing about its materials and everything about which interfaces exist. Nothing visibly happens when you rearrange a stack, which is exactly why the argument has to be made in front of a drawing before anyone builds one.

The last two carry a real deck you can page through in a browser, and each has a readable equivalent that needs no presenter — the lecture page for Week 4, and the week page for Week 8. The transcript and the slides say the same things; neither is a summary of the other.
