About this instrument
Every sound here is made in the page while you play it — three oscillators a note through a filter envelope, a reverb generated from noise, and a limiter so a handful of keys stays soft. Nothing is recorded and nothing is downloaded. Close the tab and the sound stops existing.
- Mouse. Click and hold. Drag sideways and the keys sound as you cross them.
- Keyboard. Two octaves, laid out the way a DAW lays them out. The lower one is Z X C V B N M with its sharps on S D G H J; the upper one is Q W E R T Y U I with its sharps on 2 3 5 6 7. Hold Shift for the pedal; − and = move the whole keyboard an octave.
- Touch. Tap, hold, or put several fingers down at once and slide between keys.
- Repertoire. Choose a public-domain piece and the same keys, synth and light perform it. You can still play along, or stop it at any moment.
Hold a note and its beam climbs. Let go with the pedal down and it rings on into the dark. There is nothing to finish and nothing to get right: it is an instrument, so it only ever does what you do to it.
