Science Marches On

An oddity, filed under Oddities

In 1915, the Society for Psychical Research examined Darkie, a blind New Zealand terrier whose owner claimed the dog could bark out answers to arithmetic questions — how many roods in an acre, how many furlongs in a mile, how many troy ounces to a pound. According to witnesses, Darkie answered correctly every time.

The local Lyttelton Times went further, reporting that the dog seemed to know things it had no ordinary way of knowing — dates, the current year, questions no one had coached it on in advance.
