Legend holds that five stars appeared above the head of Saint John of Nepomuk when he was martyred. So in 1721, when Czech architect Jan Santini Aichel designed the Pilgrimage Church of Saint John of Nepomuk to commemorate him, he built the number five into nearly everything.
The circular nave is ringed by five pairs of columns and five oval domes, alternating with five pointed apses. Of the five altars, the primary one bears five angels supporting a heavenly sphere set with five stars. Even the surrounding cloister follows the pattern: a ring divided into ten sections by five chapels and five gates.
The church still stands at Zelená Hora, in the Czech Republic, and was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994.
