Who 4399 are
4399 has been putting free games in a browser tab since 2004. No install, no launcher, no account: you click a game and it starts. For a generation of players in China it was the after-school internet — a shared library of small games, two-player ones especially, that ran on whatever computer happened to be in the room.
The company behind it, 四三九九网络股份有限公司 (4399 Network Co., Ltd.), is registered in Xiamen and publishes, operates and distributes web, mobile and H5 games alongside the portal itself.
Why this redesign exists. The catalogue is genuinely good; the front door is genuinely hard to use. Measured in Chrome on 7 August 2026, the live homepage carries 1,607 links — 376 of them above the fold at 1920×1080 — not one<h1>, and no viewport meta tag, so at a 390 px window the page still lays out to 1,135 px and you scroll sideways to read it.
Nothing here adds a feature, and it keeps 4399's own colours — the green category bar, the orange-red wordmark. It spends the same content on hierarchy instead: one heading per section, six cards to a row rather than sixty links, and a layout that fits the phone it is being read on.
