Programming for Masochists
Course description
This course introduces programming under conditions of sustained administrative pressure. Students who complete it will have written a substantial body of code, and will have learned to submit it inside a window narrower than the one in which they wrote it.
The course has no lectures. All contact is delivered through workshops. Workshop material is not recorded, not published in advance, and not repeated.
Course materials, including all workshop content, the assessment specifications and the model solutions, were generated using artificial intelligence. Students may not use artificial intelligence in any part of their own work.
The course is co-badged with COMP1131, ENGN1412, COMP6111, COMP6131 and ENGN6412. All cohorts attend the same workshops, sit the same examination and are assessed against the same weightings.

Learning outcomes
- Understand that an institution is not, in the general case, on your side.
- Identify the individuals within an institution who are, and route around the rest.
- Experience and bear the administrative burden of self-advocacy.
- Write programs in a language announced in the first workshop.
- Produce a written report of exactly the required length.
- Escalate a matter through three levels of an organisational hierarchy without obtaining a decision.
- Respond to an academic integrity interview at short notice.
- Accept a result.

Assessment criteria for each assessment task
Programming Report 1
A report of exactly 4,800 words, accompanied by a program. The report is marked; the program is not.
The word count includes headings, captions, references, code listings and appendices. The word count is determined by the marker.
A report that is not exactly 4,800 words receives a penalty of 100% of the marks available for this assessment.
The assessment specification is released in the workshop of the week in which the assessment is due.
Programming Report 2
A report of exactly 4,800 words, on a topic announced in week 7.
Submissions are accepted only in the twenty-four hours immediately preceding the due time.
Students who submitted Programming Report 1 early are reminded of the early submission penalty.
Attendance Signature Record
A signature is required in person at every lecture and at one laboratory session each week.
Signatures are collected on paper. A signature provided on behalf of another student is a breach of academic integrity for both students.
This component is a hurdle. A mark below 100% results in a mark of 0 for the course.
Workshop Participation
Participation is assessed by the workshop demonstrator. Criteria are not published.
Final Examination
A three hour examination, held in person, covering all workshop material including material from workshops the student was unable to attend.
The examination is returned in the final two weeks of the teaching period, which precede the examination period.
Assignment submission
Not listed.
Assessment task participation
Attendance is recorded by signature. A student must sign the attendance register in person at every lecture, and at one laboratory session each week.
The course does not schedule lectures. A student who does not sign the attendance register at a lecture has not met the attendance requirement.
Failure to meet the attendance requirement in any week results in a mark of 0 for the course.
Assessment hurdle(s)
Attendance Signature Record is a hurdle. A mark below 100% in this component results in a mark of 0 for the course.
Report length is a hurdle. Each report must be exactly 4,800 words. A report of 4,799 or 4,801 words receives a penalty of 100% of the marks available for that assessment.
Submission timing is a hurdle. See Late submission of assignments.

Late submission of assignments
Assessment submitted after the due time receives a mark of 0.
Assessment submitted more than twenty-four hours before the due time receives a mark of 0. Students are advised to submit within the twenty-four hour window immediately preceding the due time.
The submission portal does not display the time remaining.

Review of marks
A student may request a review of a mark within five minutes of that mark being released.
Marks are released without notice. A mark not appealed within five minutes of release is final and is not subject to further review.
Academic integrity
Students may be required to attend an interview regarding the use of artificial intelligence in their submitted work. Students are selected for interview arbitrarily.
An interview may be convened at any point up to and including the release of final results. The purpose of the interview is to determine a penalty.
Course materials, workshop content, assessment specifications and model solutions for this course were generated using artificial intelligence.
Returning assignments
All assessment items are returned in the final two weeks of the teaching period.
Feedback is not provided for assessment returned after the final workshop.
Tutorial registration information
Tutorials run for thirty minutes and are followed immediately by a drop-in session of one and a half hours in the same room.
Tutorial content is delivered in the thirty minute block. The drop-in session is not timetabled as contact and is not staffed by the tutor who delivered the tutorial.
Students are enrolled in the tutorial and the drop-in session as a single three-hour booking.
Other information
This class is co-badged with COMP1131, ENGN1412, COMP6111, COMP6131 and ENGN6412. A single class summary is published, under this code.
Graduate and undergraduate cohorts are assessed identically. No additional or differentiated assessment is set for the 6000-level codes.
There are no lectures.
