NUCC doesn’t go here often, but Wombeyan has some fantastic marble cave with excellent formation.
Getting there
Head out of Canberra to Goulburn, then continue north on the Taralga Road. After Taralga, you reach Richlands, where a signposted turn to the right leads to Wombeyan Caves and down a hill to the campground. Camping and cottages are both available — cavers almost exclusively camp. There’s also a dirt, windy, narrow road in from Mittagong, with plenty of wildlife — no reason to take it from Canberra except for the scenic drive, and it’s not recommended for low-clearance vehicles or towing.
Facilities
Wombeyan is extremely well set up, being a popular tourist cave destination second only to Jenolan in NSW, and on par with Yarrangobilly. There are hot showers, flush toilets, fireplaces, some cooking facilities, potable water and a cafe/kiosk — plus no shortage of Eastern Grey Kangaroos, Satin Bowerbirds and Wombats.
