Tuglow Caves

Kanangra-Boyd National Park, NSW

Tuglow Cave is a wonderfully varied cave in Kanangra-Boyd National Park. Its main attraction is the underground “canyonesque” waterfall round trip — usually requiring getting wet up to neck height, so thermals are a must. The entrance is through a rock-pile requiring technical ropework (or ladders). There are other smaller caves nearby reputedly quite good, but most people come for Tuglow Cave itself.

Getting there

A 4 hr drive from Canberra, Tuglow is accessed off the Goulburn–Oberon road. About 50km north of Taralga is a turn-off marked “Jerong/Mt Werong”, leading onto logging tracks with pines to the right. From there, use the map to reach the Dingo Dell camping area — the last section is 4WD-only, though 2WD vehicles can get within 3km via the right-hand branch. The cave itself is reached by crossing the river at the camping area and driving to a sharp right-hand corner with parking, followed by a steep ascent.

Facilities

Dingo Dell campground has a pit toilet, near a creek in an unusually cold valley. There are no facilities at the cave itself beyond plenty of trees. Be careful on joint trips with Sydney clubs — they’ll often camp by the Kowmung River instead, on the other side of Tuglow Cave.
