The static on channel 9 had been getting worse for a week, and Wren was the only person at WKPD who still believed it meant something. Everyone else called it a dying transmitter. Wren called it a heartbeat.
She almost missed the shape in it — three short bursts, a pause, three long. Not noise. A pattern. She wrote it down twice before she let herself believe it, then a third time because writing it made it real.
Outside the studio window, the treeline went quiet the way it did before something moved through it. Wren had lived at the edge of that forest long enough to know quiet was never actually quiet — it was just everything holding still to listen.
When the signal came again, closer this time, she didn't reach for the phone. She reached for the door.
