Idris cuts documentaries for a living, which means spending most of a working week deciding what a film doesn’t need. He joined Via Negativa to argue the case that editing is the discipline’s most literal example — a cut is a material fact, timestamped, and you can always point to the frame where it happened, which most of the course’s other examples can’t quite offer.

He marks the studio-based assessments and holds the view, stated early and often, that a good cut should be uncomfortable to make and only slightly less uncomfortable to defend.
