Idris Fenn runs the studios and marks the four checkpoints. Where the lecture makes the case for a week’s material, the studio is where it gets typed in, gets a type error, and gets fixed — Idris spends most of a studio walking between students who are stuck in slightly different places on the same match expression.

He is the one who insists, every checkpoint, that the reference solution’s output is the specification: if your interpreter and the sample transcript disagree on a program that isn’t ambiguous in the language reference, one of them is wrong, and it is usually not worth arguing about which without running both. Before this course he spent a few years maintaining a long-lived internal build tool, which is where the insistence on reproducible output comes from.
