SLOP3255 · Week 11 · Rhetorical audit
When sonification lies#
A persuasive sound can make a weak claim feel certain. Technical accuracy alone does not remove rhetoric.
Every mapping carries associations#
Rising pitch
may suggest growth, progress or approach
Regular rhythm
may imply stable sampling or periodic cause
Reverberation
may imply physical scale or distant space
These meanings are culturally and musically available. They are not measured values.
Four quiet ways to mislead#
| Operation | What disappears | False impression |
|---|---|---|
| Selection | ordinary intervals | dramatic event is typical |
| Cleaning | ambiguity and noise | signal was obvious |
| Quantisation | small variation | natural categories exist |
| Decoration | boundary of measured data | music is evidence |
The result may remain beautiful. The claim must remain bounded.
The certainty amplifier#
Source
Noisy values with overlapping uncertainty.
Several interpretations remain plausible.Rendering
Quantised notes, strong cadence and triumphant resolution.
The ending feels more certain than the evidence.Emotional clarity can exceed evidential clarity.
Run the hostile reading#
Before explaining your work, ask a listener:
- What do you think was measured?
- What changed in the source?
- Which sound features seem physically meaningful?
- How certain does the conclusion feel?
Compare their inference with your actual pipeline. The mismatch is design evidence.
Separate three layers#
All three may be present. The ethical failure is letting C masquerade as D.
The disclosure checklist#
| Evidence | Design |
|---|---|
| source, object, retrieval date | scale, range and timing |
| units and sampling | filtering and compression |
| cleaning and missing values | musical additions and reverb |
| uncertainty treatment | accessible alternatives |
Disclosure makes critique possible; it does not excuse a manipulative mapping.
Revise the strongest implication first#
Ethics becomes an observable revision process, not a paragraph at the end.
Listening Lab 11 · Output: honesty audit
Find the mismatch#
Task
Audit a persuasive astronomy sonification and identify where interface implication exceeds data support.
Revise
- one cue
- one disclosure
- one retest
The first revision targets the largest evidential mismatch, not the easiest cosmetic fix.
