Accessibility beyond the graph#
Sound adds a route to scientific meaning. It does not replace every other route.
Access is a system, not a format#
Sonification can support blind and low-vision learners while excluding others if audio is the only route.
One question, coordinated channels#
| Channel | Representation | Task |
|---|---|---|
| Audio | pitch contour | hear the central dip |
| Visual | labelled line plot | inspect shape and position |
| Table | sample, value, unit, flag | retrieve exact values |
| Description | pattern + limits in prose | understand the conclusion |
The scientific conclusion should survive when any one channel is unavailable.
Equivalent does not mean identical#
Mechanical substitution
A transcript lists note names but never explains the data trend.
Format changed; task support did not.Task equivalence
A structured description names the dip, its location, size and uncertainty.
The same question can be answered.Choose an alternative by the work it enables.
Control belongs to the listener#
Control is part of meaning because timing and repetition shape interpretation.
A keyboard-only pass#
| Action | Required feedback |
|---|---|
| Tab to transport | visible focus and unambiguous label |
| Activate play | status changes without relying on colour |
| Switch mapping | new rule is announced and displayed |
| Stop | audio ends immediately; focus remains stable |
If the interface works only with a mouse, the scientific instrument is incomplete.
Design for listening differences#
Hearing range
Keep essential cues out of extreme pitch regions.
Sensory load
Allow layers, motion and repetition to be reduced.
Equipment
Do not require stereo or expensive headphones.
Accessibility is not a single persona. Offer adjustable, redundant routes.
Test by removing a channel#
Audio only
Can the trend and uncertainty be identified?
Visual only
Can playback state and mapping be understood?
Text + keyboard
Can the same conclusion be reached and controlled?
Record task success, not simply whether a feature technically exists.
Listening Lab 10 · Output: access matrix
Design without sound#
Task
Remove one sensory channel from your instrument and preserve the same scientific question through another route.
Pass
- same task
- independent control
- tested alternative
