The eight rules

SLOP3908 · Week 1

The same four people. The same end of the bar. Half past four on a Tuesday.

Nobody arranged it.

Three settings, not two

  • First place — home
  • Second place — work
  • Third place — the other one

Oldenburg’s claim: a life needs all three, and most people now have two.

The eight

  1. Neutral ground
  2. A leveller
  3. Conversation is the main activity
  4. Accessible and accommodating
  5. The regulars
  6. A low profile
  7. The mood is playful
  8. A home away from home

1. Neutral ground

Nobody hosts. Nobody is obliged to be there and nobody can be made to stay.

You can leave without explaining, and arrive without an invitation.

Which of the places you can think of fail this?

2. A leveller

Rank at the door does not travel into the room.

The consultant and the delivery driver are both just people at the bar.

Ask this again in week 4. It is the claim that survives least well.

3. Conversation is the main activity

Not eating, not watching, not working alongside strangers.

Talk, as the point rather than the accompaniment.

Week 7 breaks this one.

4. Accessible and accommodating

Open when you need it. Near enough to reach without planning.

Nothing to book, nothing to bring.

Week 9: what does “accessible” mean when the door is a graphics card?

5. The regulars

The place is set by who is usually in it — not by the owner, not by the decor.

A newcomer is absorbed by the regulars or not at all.

Thursday you will try to count them, and discover you cannot define them.

6. A low profile

Plain. Unselfconscious. Not designed to be a third place.

The ones built to be community hubs mostly are not.

This is the course’s closing argument, twelve weeks early.

7. The mood is playful

Wit over seriousness. Nobody is closing.

Anxiety is the thing the room is supposed to remove.

8. A home away from home

Rootedness, warmth, possession without ownership.

Your seat. Not because anyone said so.

What is missing?

Nothing here says who is kept out

Eight characteristics. Not one of them about the boundary.

Hold that thought until week 3 — and then week 4 will tell you the warmth and the edge are the same mechanism.

Thursday

Take a place you already go to.

  • forty unbroken minutes
  • write in the room
  • describe before you explain
  • come back knowing which of the eight it fails

Read Oldenburg before you go

You are not scoring the place.

You are finding out which of the eight are load-bearing, and which are just 1989.
