Levels of resolution

You’ve learned to read the room. Now: what do you do when it’s still going wrong?

The ladder

  1. Notice: the friction is real, not imagined
  2. Name it privately: to yourself, before anyone else
  3. Raise it directly: with the person, plainly, without an audience
  4. Raise it with a third party: when direct hasn’t worked, or can’t safely be tried
  5. Disengage: when none of the above is working, and staying costs more than leaving

The lowest rung that would actually work is usually the right one. Most people skip straight to the top.

Why people skip rungs

  • rung 3 requires the emotional discipline Week 1 asked you to start building; without it, “raise it directly” turns into an ambush
  • rung 5 feels safest but is also the most expensive: it ends the relationship it was supposed to repair
  • the ladder only works in the moment if you already know your own baseline well enough to tell which rung you’re on

Closing the loop

Week 1 asked you to log your own tension. This is what that log was for: knowing which rung you’re on before you’re three rungs past it.
