Proxemics#
How far apart people stand is a message, not an accident.
Edward Hall’s four zones#
- Intimate (0–45cm): reserved for the closest relationships, or forced by crowding
- Personal (45cm–1.2m): friends, family, conversation at arm’s length
- Social (1.2–3.6m): colleagues, acquaintances, most daily business
- Public (3.6m+): strangers, lecturers, anyone performing rather than conversing
Which zone two people default to is rarely a conscious choice; that’s exactly why it’s worth watching.
Reading a zone violation#
- someone stepping into personal space uninvited is rarely random
- a forced intimate-zone crowd (a packed lift, a crowded train) suspends the normal rules, and everyone in it knows the suspension is temporary
- a relationship that outgrows its usual zone is a relationship changing, whether or not anyone’s said so yet
This week’s field task#
Measure or estimate distances across at least three relationship types. Which zone did each pairing default to?
Diagnosis assessment opens#
1200–1800 words. Three dated incidents. Named frameworks. Due this week.
