Coexistence 101#
Before you can read a room, you need a working read on yourself.
An old idea, in a lot of different clothes#
Presence, emotional discipline, empathy and resilience aren’t four separate skills stacked on top of each other.
The first is what makes the other three possible.
You can’t consistently read what other people need if you’re not tracking what’s happening in you.
Presence#
Noticing your own attention before it’s already gone somewhere else.
- what pulled your focus in the last hour, and did you choose it
- the gap between “I’m fine” and actually checking
- attention as the first resource this course asks you to manage
Emotional discipline#
Not suppression: the gap between feeling something and acting on it.
- naming the feeling buys you the gap
- the gap is where every good decision in this course happens
- Week 12 comes back to exactly this gap, under pressure
Empathy is a practice, not a trait#
You don’t “have” empathy the way you have a height.
You run it, deliberately, on purpose, in specific moments, and it gets better with use, like anything else you practise.
Resilience#
The capacity to recover your baseline after a room knocks you off it.
- recovery is a skill you can watch yourself get better at
- Week 1’s field task is the first data point on your own baseline
- everything after this week is you watching other people’s
This week’s task#
Log three moments your attention or mood shifted today. Bring the log.
What’s ahead#
- Week 2: Oldenburg’s third place
- Week 3: Goffman’s civil inattention
- Week 4: Hall’s proxemics, and the diagnosis assessment opens
Keep your log from this week. You’ll need it again in Week 12.
