Week 7 Problem Session: Indifference equations practice
Re-deriving optimal bluff frequency and MDF from scratch, then solving both at a new bet size to check the method, not just the memorized ratio
5 April 2027
Before the session#
Read the lecture page. Bring the $100 pot / $50 bet numbers — 25% optimal bluff frequency, 66.7% MDF — the session re-derives both from the raw EV equations rather than starting from the ratios.
In the session#
The group sets EV(call) = EV(fold) and EV(bet-as-bluff) = EV(check) from a blank page, solving both down to x* = bet/(pot+bet) and c* = pot/(pot+bet) before checking against the lecture’s numbers.
Then everyone repeats the whole derivation at a new bet size (a pot-sized bet rather than a half-pot bet), predicting first whether the bluff frequency should go up or down before doing the algebra, then checking the prediction against the number.
Afterwards#
Nothing is marked this week. Going into week 8: comfort setting up an indifference equation for an unseen bet size, since week 8 builds the full GTO definition directly on top of this same idea.
The spec
What you bring to the session. Written so a reader can tell whether it has been met without asking you.
- given a pot and a bet size, you can set up and solve both indifference equations from scratch to get optimal bluff frequency and MDF
- you can explain in words why an indifference condition, not a single best action, is the right target when facing a mixed strategy
