Week 3 Problem Session: Pot odds practice
The third Problem Session — rebuilding the deck's flagship hand from scratch, from outs count through to a call-or-fold verdict in dollars
8 March 2027
Before the session#
Watch the deck once through. Don’t try to memorize the flagship hand’s numbers — the session rebuilds them from the board up.
In the session#
The group re-derives the flagship hand’s outs count, exact equity, pot-odds threshold, and EV(call) from scratch, checking each step against the deck’s stated answer before moving to the next. Then the same four-step process (outs → equity → threshold → EV) gets pointed at a second hand nobody has seen before, with a different draw type and different bet sizing, to check the method generalizes rather than having been memorized for one board.
The card-removal miscount from the deck gets its own few minutes: everyone tries the naive 13-minus-board-spades count first, on purpose, before being shown why it overshoots.
Afterwards#
Nothing is marked this week. What should be settled going into week 4: the four-step decision process, and comfort with the exact hypergeometric formula behind step two.
The spec
What you bring to the session. Written so a reader can tell whether it has been met without asking you.
- given a hand and board, you can count outs correctly, including your own hole cards in what gets removed from the deck
- you can compute a pot-odds threshold and an EV-of-call figure for a hand that was not shown in lecture
