Week 9: The body knows before the thought does
Closing unit 3 — the somatic marker hypothesis, and why relief so often feels physical before it feels like a conclusion
19 April 2027
The somatic marker hypothesis proposes that bodily states — a tightened chest, a held breath — aren’t just downstream side effects of emotion but part of how the mind evaluates a situation in the first place. Relief is a clean place to test the idea informally: many people report the bodily release — the exhale, the dropped shoulders — arriving a beat before the verbal thought “I don’t need to worry about that anymore,” rather than after it.
Outline#
- the somatic marker hypothesis, briefly, and the chicken-or-egg question it raises about bodily signals and conscious evaluation
- what it means if the body’s “it’s fine now” consistently outpaces the mind’s spoken version of the same conclusion
- closing unit 3: three weeks of experience that exists between people or across time, ending on one that exists on nobody’s schedule but its own
