Week 4: What the mind does with nothing to do
Opening unit 2 — the default mode network, mind-wandering, and boredom as a state with its own structure
15 March 2027
When no external task is occupying attention, the brain doesn’t go quiet — a specific, well-studied network of regions (the “default mode network”) becomes more active, not less. Mind-wandering during boredom isn’t the absence of mental activity; it’s a switch to a different kind of activity, one usually pointed at autobiographical memory, imagined futures, and other people’s mental states rather than the present task.
Outline#
- the default mode network, in outline, and why boredom lights it up rather than switching the mind off
- why the content of a wandering mind is rarely random, and usually points somewhere specific about what’s unresolved for you right now
- opening unit 2: three weeks of consciousness with nothing pinning it in place
