Experience Subjective Consciousness

SLOP1163 — Week 1

A different kind of course

Every course on the mind you’ve taken so far hands you a description and calls it understanding.

This one doesn’t.

“Consciousness is what makes the mind-body problem really intractable.”

— Thomas Nagel

The hard problem, stated plainly

Not: how does the brain produce behaviour.

That’s hard, but it’s ordinary science.

The hard problem is: why is there something it is like to be a brain doing that, at all?

Nagel’s bat

You could know every physical fact about echolocation.

Neuron firing rates. Auditory cortex maps. Wing muscle timing.

You still wouldn’t know what it’s like to be the bat.

The explanatory gap

physical story → ??? → felt experience

The ”???” is the whole course.

Why this course is a practicum

You cannot read your way across the explanatory gap.

So we don’t try to.

Each week: induce → notice → describe, in that order.

The semester, in four units

  1. Immediate sensation — the body registers something all at once
  2. The idling mind — consciousness with nothing pinning it down
  3. Memory & others — experience across time, or between people
  4. Scale & release — the self against something larger than itself

Twelve inductions

Cold water. Laughter. Earned exhaustion. Boredom. Sleep’s edge. Intuition.

Scent-memory. Shared silence. Relief. Awe. Grief. Letting go.

One per week. Yours to actually do.

The gap won’t close by December

That’s not a failure condition.

It’s the finding.
