Policies and support
Course expectations for attendance, consent, privacy, integrity, equipment and safe photographic practice in SLOP1810.
Attendance and participation
This is a fully in-person course. Lectures introduce the week's problem; practical sessions depend on paired exercises, live feedback and reviewing photographs together. Website material supports preparation and revision, but it is not an online replacement for attending class.
Arrive prepared for the role assigned that week and bring the requested phone, camera, files or planning material. If illness or another serious circumstance prevents attendance, contact a convenor as early as reasonably possible. The teaching team will explain what can be made up and what depended on being present.
Consent, privacy and sharing
Permission to take a photograph is not automatically permission to show it in class, submit it for assessment, publish it online or use it in a portfolio. Treat each use as a separate decision and make sure the person understands where the image will appear.
- Ask before the camera comes out and check again if the plan changes.
- Do not pressure anyone to pose, continue or explain a refusal.
- Keep classmates' and partners' photographs private by default.
- Do not download, repost or retain another student's images.
- If permission is withdrawn before publication or assessment, stop using the image and speak to the teaching team about a replacement.
Academic integrity
ANU requires students to act honestly, responsibly and ethically, with respect and fairness in scholarly practice. Work submitted for assessment must be genuine and original, and the work and contributions of other people must be appropriately acknowledged. Read the officialANU Student Academic Integrity Policyand theAcademic Integrity Rule 2021.
For this course, submit photographs you took and edits and written reflections you completed. Collaboration is expected, but the assessable decisions attributed to you must be yours. Credit references, presets, supplied assets and substantial assistance. Do not plagiarise, collude, contract cheat, submit another person's work as your own, recycle unrelated earlier work, or fabricate documents, data, feedback or evidence of your process.
AI use
AI-assisted photo editing is permitted. You may use AI tools to retouch or enhance photographs you took, including tools that adjust exposure, colour, contrast, noise, sharpness or local image details. AI may also support brainstorming, planning and copy-editing. Keep the original photograph and acknowledge substantial AI assistance in the submitted process note.
The only prohibited uses are submitting an image generated from scratch by AI instead of a photograph you took, and using AI to fabricate or alter camera settings, capture parameters or EXIF metadata. Visual editing of your own photograph is allowed; rewriting the recorded facts of how it was captured is not.
Extensions and late work
Assessment due dates and late-submission conditions are stated on the relevant assessment page. A published due date remains in effect unless an extension or other assessment adjustment is approved.
Requests for extensions and other assessment adjustments must follow ANU rules. Use the officialANU Extenuating Circumstances Application and assessment-extension guidancefor the current eligibility information and ANUHub application pathway. Contact the course convenor as early as possible if you are unsure which request applies to your circumstances.
Equipment and files
A phone or camera is suitable unless a weekly task names a specific capability. Choose equipment that can remain part of the date rather than turning it into a production. Bring charged batteries, available storage and the accessories requested for the exercise.
Keep at least two copies of assessment photographs and preserve the original files. Equipment failure or a lost memory card does not automatically change a deadline, so contact the teaching team as soon as a problem occurs rather than waiting until submission time.
Safety and respectful practice
No photograph requires trespassing, entering traffic, ignoring venue rules or continuing in unsafe weather or light. Check the location, route home and any permission requirements before the date. Stop the exercise if either person feels unsafe or uncomfortable.
These expectations follow theANU Student Code of Conduct, which requires students to communicate with consideration, respect and courtesy, and to act in ways that support the dignity, safety, personal and bodily autonomy, and wellbeing of others. For this course, respect members of the public and the spaces you use. Do not block paths, photograph bystanders as the main subject without permission, or ask your girlfriend to take a physical risk for the frame.
Accessibility and adjustments
Contact a convenor early if a location, equipment requirement, paired role or assessment format creates an access barrier. The teaching team can discuss an accessible location, alternative practical role or approved adjustment without requiring you to disclose personal details to classmates.
