Binge Watching#
What happens to “one more episode” once nobody is keeping count?
A familiar scene#
You sit down meaning to watch “an episode or two.” Four hours later you surface, and the honest answer to “how many did I watch” takes a moment to work out — not because the number is secret, but because nothing ever asked you to hold it in mind.
This week’s question#
A binge is the same “one more” decision, made dozens of times in an evening. Why does nobody — including you — ever seem to be adding it up while it’s happening?
Each step is visible; the sum isn’t#
Every individual step forward is visible. The running total is not, until you stop and look back at it from the outside.
Hidden vs. visible count#
Hidden total
- Each episode feels small on its own
- Nothing shows the running number
- Stopping never has to reckon with the sum
Visible total
- "You've now watched six"
- The running number is unavoidable
- Stopping becomes a live comparison
The interactive experiment: How Many Did You Actually Watch?#
A small, made-up show. Watch as many episodes as you like, one at a time. The running count stays hidden while you decide — only a chip appears per episode. The real total is revealed only when you stop.
Takeaway#
The count was tracked the whole time — it just was never shown. A hidden running total doesn’t slow anyone down, because there was never a number to react to.
