What is a copy?

SLOP2474 — The Forger’s Craft, week 1

A copy declares itself. A forgery doesn’t.

That’s the whole difference. Not skill, not intent — one missing piece of paper.

Four materials, one semester

  • paint
  • prose
  • currency
  • code

Same argument, different chemistry.

Why fake it to understand it

Failing to convincingly copy something is the fastest way to find out what you left out of your understanding of the real thing.

A forger learns this earlier than anyone else does.

The connoisseur’s asymmetry

A forger has to get every detail right, at once, forwards.

A detector only has to find the one detail that’s wrong.

That asymmetry is the shape of every detection problem this semester touches.

The marvel in painting lies between likeness and unlikeness.

What this course is not

Not a course in getting away with it.

Every graded piece carries a materials-and-method note — the declaration that turns the semester’s own fakes back into copies.

Before next week

Read the studio brief and bring one small, deliberately bad copy to make with your own hands.
