What makes it wrong

SLOP8217 · Week 1

A wall with nothing written on it cannot be wrong.

出口

because it never offered any English

出口   EXPORT

secondary

somewhere a promise was made that the second line carries the first

The contract

who promised what, to whom, and how you establish that they did

Three verification levels

  • primary — Recorded from the artefact, or from a report that reproduces it.
  • secondary — Reported by others. This course has not seen the artefact itself.
  • apocryphal — Widely repeated. No primary source has been found.

apocryphal is a finding rather than a failure

What a record has to contain

  • what the artefact said
  • where and when it was recorded
  • how confident you are that it exists as described
  • what you think produced it

出口 EXPORT, read twice

once as a joke, once as evidence
