Case clinic 1

Week 5 — the first case with no prior write-up

This log is the record

No prior write-up to check against. No departmental precedent to lean on. What you log this week is what exists.

The case

Seminar Room 3, Arts Annex — flagged “do not reassign” since a fire exit was bricked over in a past renovation. Entered alone, the room reads as extending further than the corridor outside allows. Nobody has logged what’s at the far end, because nobody who’s gone alone has found their own way back out.

Applying the scheme live

Four categories from week 2 — persistent, recurring, responsive, dormant. This case currently reads as responsive. State why, and what evidence would move it.

Never enter without a buddy staying outside

An occupant cannot find their own way back out. Only the observer who stayed in the corridor, opening the door from that side, ends the observation. This is not caution — it is the only way out.

The case week 4 previewed

Corroboration and rescue turn out to be the same requirement. The buddy system stops being paperwork the moment a lone observer literally cannot leave without it.

Stage one: diagnose

Thermometer and hygrometer reading, just inside the door, against a corridor baseline. Measurably cooler and drier means the case is live today. A normal reading means it isn’t — log that too.

Stage two: respond

Only once diagnosis confirms the case is live. One observer inside, one in the corridor. Two stages, logged separately — not one blurred call made under pressure.

Diagnose first. Respond separately. Week 3’s English witch bottles use the same shape — this is the first case built to test it, not just cite it.

The nazar amulet, run honestly

Clipped to the inside door handle. Logged whether it’s cracked, next to whatever the thermometer says. Not run because anyone’s sure it does anything here — run because it costs nothing to log, and the result goes in the file either way.

Sourcing discipline, turned inward

The same rule this course holds a published case to applies to a case this course is generating itself. No exception for material closer to home.

After this week

Keep the log — classification, diagnose/respond, and nazar reading all included. Next week’s stairwell case gets the same treatment, then both feed the Field Case File.
