Week 4 Lab: The dotfiles repository
Week 4 lab, turn a pile of config into a repository someone else could read and rebuild
15 March 2027
The first lab marked toward the Dotfiles Repository. We treat the config as what it is becoming: a codebase.
Before the lab#
Have your config under git with commit messages a stranger could follow.
In the lab#
You swap repositories with a partner and try to understand each other’s setups cold, with no narration. Wherever your partner gets lost is a documentation bug, and you fix it before you leave. We look at structure, naming, and history as engineering, not decoration.
Afterwards#
You leave with a repository that reads like it was meant to be read, and a list of the places it still does not.
The spec
What you bring to the session. Written so a reader can tell whether it has been met without asking you.
- your config lives in one git repository with a readable history
- the repository has a README that explains its structure
- a partner can find where any given setting lives without asking you
