Week 3 Lab: Choosing a manager
Week 3 lab, commit to a window manager and write the first configuration you will have to defend
8 March 2027
The lab where you pick a theory of work and start living inside it.
Before the lab#
Bring notes from your day on a tiling manager and your day on a floating one, and the moment in each where the software disagreed with you.
In the lab#
You commit to a manager and write a first config: keybindings, workspaces, and a layout policy you can name. We review these in pairs, and the only question that matters is whether you can explain a choice rather than whether it is the choice your partner would have made.
Afterwards#
You leave able to run your desktop from the keyboard, with a config that already has opinions.
The spec
What you bring to the session. Written so a reader can tell whether it has been met without asking you.
- you have a window manager running with a config under git
- you can move, resize, and switch windows without the mouse
- you can state the layout policy you chose and the one you rejected
