Minimalism versus Maximalism

Week 9. Two congregations that do not worship together.

One question, two answers

What is a desktop for when it is not being used?

The two positions

  • minimalism: the desktop should recede; what you remove, you have mastered
  • maximalism: the screen is a canvas; density is generosity
  • empty space as discipline, against a refusal to apologise for wanting more

minimalism removes until only the work is left; maximalism fills the canvas

The honest and dishonest versions

  • minimalism as clarity, against minimalism as fear of commitment
  • maximalism as abundance, against maximalism as noise standing in for a decision
  • every setup is one of these, done well or done as avoidance

This is philosophy, not preference

You will end the course in one church or the other.

Before next week

Push your setup hard toward one pole for a day. Record what you gained, what you missed, and whether you want it back.
