Typography and the Terminal

Week 6. The letters you stare at all day.

Most typography, least thought

The terminal is where type matters most and gets considered least.

What monospace decides

  • fixed metrics constrain the whole layout
  • hinting and rendering make one font crisp here and muddy there
  • patch fonts smuggle icons into the character grid, so a battery is also text

The ligature argument

Programming ligatures fuse characters into one glyph, turning “not equal” into a single mark. People find them elegant, or find them a lie about what the code actually says.

if (a !== b && c >= d) return x ?? y; // -> => != >= <= |>

Legibility or vibes

A font can be chosen measured, boring, and correct, or for the feeling it gives the screenshot. The best setups know which they are optimising and do not pretend the two are the same.

Choose on purpose

Name the thing you are optimising for.

Before next week

Set your terminal in two fonts, one for legibility and one for feel. Read real code in each for ten minutes and record which you reach for.
