SLOP3762 · Week 1

The claim

No one signs up to be cheated.

Plenty of people sign up to be punished.

The instant after you die, do you have a specific reason to believe the next attempt can win?

Two things that look the same

  • A boss that one-shots you from full health, telegraphed for a full second
  • A boss that one-shots you from full health, with no tell at all

Same death counter. Same damage number. Not the same design.

The test

Punishing: the failure is legible — you can name the exact decision that caused it.

Cheating: the failure is arbitrary — the numbers were just bigger than expected.

Punishing case

Sekiro — Lady Butterfly’s double-jump dive.

Long enough to deflect or dodge. Every death teaches the same lesson, faster, the second time.

Cheating case

A damage-sponge enemy.

No new tell. No new pattern. Just a bigger number between you and the checkpoint. Failure here teaches nothing.

The actual product

Not difficulty. Belief — conditional on having correctly read what just happened.

This semester

Twelve weeks, twelve mechanisms for keeping that belief legible: death’s framing, a level’s shape, an attack’s grammar, a boss’s staging, and more.

Every week produces an artefact. Next week: death as a narrative verb.
