The eleven, in one pass

the route, the trolley, the shelf, the endcap, the wall, the queue, the checkout, the music, the card, the car park — and the door that opened all of it in week one.

What a receipt records

  • price, quantity, tax, a loyalty number
  • not the route it made you walk, not the wait it made you stand, not the music that set your pace
  • the only document the store gives you back, and it accounts for none of the mechanism

Before the counter-mapping project

  • keep a receipt from this week, and read it properly before you throw it out
  • state the semester’s argument in one sentence
  • say what the supermarket would have to change to no longer earn this course
