One Lap Is the Whole Store#
Lecture 6 — SLOP2236
Reaching any one of them costs you the whole floor.#
The fresh wall#
- dairy, produce, bakery, meat: sit at the building’s edge in nearly every store you’ve entered
- reaching any single one costs a lap of the whole floor
- week two’s route argument, scaled to the size of the building
The perimeter is not a shortcut#
It’s the longest reasonable path, disguised as the natural one.
One of the basic situationist practices is the dérive, a technique of transient passage through varied ambiances.
— Guy Debord, Theory of the Dérive
The dérive report, set#
- due after this week — one real or invented store, one drift, one report
- at least three of weeks one to six’s mechanisms, named and located
- read the brief before next session
Before next week#
- recall the last store you were in
- draw its outer wall from memory before you draw anything else
- bring the drawing, and be ready to trace it aloud
